Scraping lead acid batteries from APC UPS units.

Used lead acid batteries can be recycled in a variety of ways, the easiest is to return them to the seller. Sometime that's not cost efficient, so here's some options---
1) find a battery wholesaler in your area in the yellow pages and drop them off (sometimes they'll even pay you).
2) any retailer handling lead acid batteries---Sears-Walmart-Autozone or even Radio Shack.
3) you can also drop off @ a scrap yard if you have sizable amount and they will pay you.
4) In some parts of the Country you have recycling centers and you can find them online or yellow pages.
5) Or ship your scrap UPS Battery to:

What's the Difference Between UPS Battery Voltage and Amperage?

Question: What is the difference between voltage and amperage in relation to replacement UPS batteries?

Answer: When replacing a battery in a APC UPS also known as RBC pack, we must always maintain the same voltage that we started with. The voltage of the battery is the push, or pressure, as one would relate to the pressure in a water hose. Amperage, on the other hand, is the amount of energy use as measured in amp hours, similar to the amount of flow in a water hose. So, to summarize, we must always use the same voltage in our replacement batteries, but we can change the amperage slightly to increase our run time. If this is done in small amounts, the effect on longevity of the APC UPS unit will not be adversely compromised.

Does the APC UPS size make a difference in performance and battery life?

Yes. Due to many factors the APC UPS size makes a big diffence in how your UPS performs. PC's with faster hard drives, larger processes and more ram plus peripherals like monitors, scanners wireless keyboards, routers and such all use UPS battery power when off line.

It's imperative to size the unit to your needs plus add a little more UPS battery power for later needs. It's also a must when replacing the battery to chose the correct size, type and amp. hours(how long the battery will last) at replacement time.

Getting the wrong battery could waste your time and money.

How to test your APC UPS Battery.

The first step is to get a hairdryer out, plug it into the back of the APC UPS unit. Unplug all other outlets being used by the unit, then turn on hairdryer. Remove cord from wall outlet, if unit continues to work it should between 3-4 minutes before the hairdryer stops working. Anytime less than that its safe to say you need a UPS battery replacement.
